How to Prevent Pilling on Clothes – 7 Laundry Tips That Work

Pilling on one of the most common reasons why clothes start to look worn too quickly. Often, pilling is not solely due to the material, but also to how clothes are washed and used.

With proper washing methods, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your clothes and keep them looking neat for longer. Here are seven simple tips to reduce pilling on your clothes.

1. Wash clothes inside out

When you turn your garment inside out before washing, you reduce the rubbing of the fabric surface against other clothes. This helps keep the surface neater and reduces pilling.

2. Use a lower washing temperature

Most clothes get clean well at just 30–40 degrees Celsius. Too high a temperature can weaken fibers and accelerate pilling.

3. Don't overfill the washing machine

When the washing machine is too full, clothes rub more forcefully against each other. This increases the risk of pilling, especially in soft fabrics.

4. Wash similar fabrics together

Thick materials, such as jeans, can wear down softer fabrics during washing. Therefore, hoodies and T-shirts should be washed together with similar types of garments.

5. Use laundry detergent sparingly

Too much detergent doesn't make clothes cleaner. It can remain in the fibers and weaken the fabric surface in the long run.

6. Avoid the tumble dryer

The strong movement and heat of a tumble dryer increase fabric wear. Air drying is generally a gentler option for clothes.

7. Pay attention to material quality

Washing methods have a big impact, but material quality also matters. High-quality fabrics withstand wear and washing better, which helps keep the garment's surface neat for longer.

Level Up clothes are designed to withstand everyday use. Material choices and finishing help keep the fabric surface neat even after repeated washes.
